Why do schools still use IXL? ›

Teaching students with ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences requires a highly individualized approach. High school math teacher Barbara Knight found that implementing IXL Math and the Real-Time Diagnostic in her classroom was key in differentiating instruction for students with special needs.

Second grade is displayed as Level D. Third grade is displayed as Level E.

Limited Engagement: One major drawback of IXL is its emphasis on repetitive practice rather than fostering deep understanding. The program often focuses on isolated skills without providing real-world context or opportunities for critical thinking.

Obviously, IXL is just a tool and its usefulness varies with the user. For teachers (and schools) who are committed to using it to help students, it can be very effective. There is no advertising and there are a ton of resources to go along with implementation of any kind. Try it.

With IXL, it is possible to never be done with homework. If a student is required to get to a SmartScore of 85 and are struggling with a concept, it would take them far longer to complete than the 20 questions of book work. Some students of BAMS agree that IXL is causing them too much stress.

Tier 3: Personalized plans for individualized interventions

Meet students where they are: IXL offers personalized learning plans for each student. Students can choose from the array of problems tuned to their skill level or teachers can recommend problems to individual students to target trouble spots.

How long should you spend on IXL? ›

IXL recommends that students initially aim to diagnose until they reveal complete diagnostic data. This should take about 45 minutes to 1 hour per subject and can be done over multiple sessions. After getting their initial levels, students should answer about 10 to 15 questions per week in the Real-Time Diagnostic.

IXL has a free practice limit of 20 problems per day, and is a resource with a user-friendly interface easily accessible for extra practice at home.
